I came to First Wharton as pastor in May 2013. It has been amazing seeing God at work in our church family. I invited Jesus Christ into my heart when I was 13 years old, after my father suffered a near-fatal truck accident. God used that event to show me that I needed Jesus as my Savior and Lord. While attending a revival service at Runge First Baptist Church, God convicted me of my sins, and I received Jesus into my heart. At the age of 15, I felt God calling me to preach.

One of the happiest days of my life was when I married Tammy Pullin, my childhood sweetheart, at the age of 20. Together, we attended Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. I have previously pastored 3 other churches: Gibtown Baptist Church in Gibtown, TX, Central Baptist Church in Itasca, TX, and First Baptist Church in Ganado, TX. Tammy and I also served in Brazil for 13 ½ years. We have two children and 6 grandchildren.

Sherri has served as our Minister of Music since June of 2009.  She and her husband, Vance, are long-time residents of Needville.  Her Alma Mater is Houston Baptist University with studies in vocal performance.

“It has truly been a terrific joy to serve at First Baptist!  I have had the blessing of serving in music ministry for over 40 years, ministering in churches of all sizes and shapes, and in capacities from pianist to concert artist and evangelist, to children’s choir minister, to senior choir director, and even administrating a school of the arts!  The love, fellowship, and faithfulness here at FBC surpasses them all!  I really believe that we are ALL worshippers, even though we may not consider ourselves singers!  The Lord loves to hear our praises ringing out to Him."

"We love spending time with our three children, their spouses, and our 7 AMAZING and perfect grandchildren!!  God has been really good to us and we cherish our time with them!"

Youth Director

As a child, my family moved around a lot. I came to know Christ as my savior when I was twelve years old at a youth camp in Buffalo Gap, TX. We came to Wharton when I was a freshman in high school. I graduated from Wharton High School in 1981. It was there, as a junior, that I met the love of my life, Tessa. We were married the January after we graduated high school. We were blessed with three children and now have seven grandchildren.

Shortly after graduation we moved away from Wharton for a number of years. We moved back to Wharton in 1998. I began volunteering with the youth ministry of First Baptist church around 1999; first as someone who hung out with the students, played basketball with them, and was a chaperone on many trips. I gradually became more and more involved in the ministry; so much so that the Youth Pastor at that time began introducing me as his Associate Youth Pastor. When that Youth Pastor left in 2003, I became the de-facto Volunteer Youth Director. I served in that capacity for approximately two years when the church decided to hire a Part-Time Youth Director. I continued working with the youth ministry assisting the new Director until he left in 2007. I again became the de-facto Volunteer Youth Director. In 2012, the church made the decision to put me on as staff and I became the official Youth Director for First Baptist Church of Wharton, TX.

Our youth ministry seeks to serve the students of our community. We provide them with a place of safety, caring, and spiritual support. The church is very supportive of the youth ministry and gives to the ministry in a variety of ways. Our purpose is to bring young people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and then, to help them grow in their relationship with Him.

Office Manager

Gena Labay

My career in office administration started at First United Methodist Church Wharton in 1995 as their part time Financial Secretary.  In 2000 I received a call from the First United Methodist Church El Campo asking if I would like to advance my career and work as their full time Administration Secretary. What a blessing it was to receive that call. I enjoyed the 11 years I worked there.

I took a small break away from the church and worked for an oil field company for 14 months.  I missed the ministry and was lucky enough to be able to join First Baptist Church Wharton as Office Manager in May of 2013.

During my 20+ years serving in the ministry, I have worked with 6 different pastors. It is my goal to be efficient, yet, warm and caring with everyone who enters my office.
